The Thrill of the Find

Don't you just love it when you find a new author? Or a new series? This has just happened to me.

I requested a book for review from Book Binge, and I read it, and did that thing. You know the one, where you finish the book and go back immediately and start it again? That thing.

The book is called Branded Sanctuary by Joey W. Hill. I have a love/less love relationship with Joey Hill. I loved her Vampire Queen's Servant series, but had a decidedly negative reaction to her mermaid series. But I think that she writes remarkably romantic and emotional stories, so I was more than happy to give her another shot.

I had absolutely no idea that Branded Sanctuary was actually book 7 in the Nature of Desire series. Oh, once I got into it, I realized that it must be a part of a loosely tied together series because of two secondary characters in the book who play a major role in the story and have already had their HEA. But in no way did it detract from my absolute enjoyment of the book.

The thing that shocks me, is that this book is about the Dom/sub lifestyle. One that I've always, without equivocation said does not work for me. I cannot relate to the pain/pleasure w/your sex thing. The thing about this book is that the heroine doesn't get it either. Not even a little. She's not programmed that way, and the hero is a submissive. Which means she spends most of the book trying to understand why he enjoys it, whether she could ever be enough for him and whether they she can get over her own demons enough to make a go of it with him.

It is a gorgeously crafted story. One that absolutely brought tears to my eyes over and over again. I loved every moment of it. And the most exciting part is that it's got 6 preceding books. Which means I'll be buying at least two of them right off the bat. Mostly because I've got to read the love story of those two secondary characters I mentioned.

Don't you just love finding a new to you series?

YOUR TURN: Have you discovered any new series lately? Either by a new-to-you author? Or an author whose work you already love?

I'm glad you enjoyed the book.

Unfortunately for me, I have never been able to finish a Joey Hill book. I've bought about 3 or 4 books by her and just can't seem to get into them at all. Yet I see from numerous other bloggers and readers that she is very popular and well liked by them. Just doesn't work for me unfortunately.

I love discovering a new author and/or series. I just found both. Debut author Addison Fox just released book 1 in her Sons of the Zodiac series, WARRIOR ASCENDED. I reviewed it on Monday over at TRD. Loved it!!

@MsM - I get that. There are several authors that others love that I have a hard time with. This book is very unlike her paranormals. All of the focus is on the couple and their evolution, so it worked for me.

@Gannon - I saw that review I need to think about adding Addison Fox to my list.

I forgot to address the part of your post about finding new authors.

Since I began blogging (a little over a year ago) I have "discovered" soooooooo many great new to me authors because of other bloggers. I just can't thank all the bloggers out there who introduced me to authors who are now my MUST READ favorite authors.

I don't know if I would have discovered people like Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, Jeanine Frost, Lora Leigh, Evangeline Anderson or Maya Banks without other bloggers.

At the end of 2009 I had made a promise to myself to find out what all the rage was about urban fantasy books - the only thing UF I had ever read was JR Ward's Blackdagger Brotherhood series. So to kick off 2010 I bought the first few books in series by Jeanine Frost and Patricia Briggs and I absolutely adore them!

The best part is, there are already several books out there so I don't have to wait to dig in!
I love discovering a new to me author, its like Christmas morning when your 5!

:o)

I have not discovered any new series lately - and series are my passion - so I was very happy to read this post.

Don't you just love when you discover a book that has a back list? It's like a gift that keeps on giving.

@Maria - I actually thought of you today. I'm re-reading Butterfly Tattoo on my eReader. It's such a gorgeous story! And totally relates to yesterday's post about crying.

Oh Kati, Kati, Kati - I MISS YOU! And yes, Butterfly Tattoo is a GORGEOUS book.

But unlike you and Marisa, I never re-read books. What's up with that?

The Nature of Desire series is good - I'm still working my way through them. Since I know you were looking for m/m - one of the books in the series - Rough Canvas - is m/m. I read an excerpt of it when Joey Hill posted at Dear Author. I'd never read D/s before, but the excerpt just drew me in and I had to purchase the book. The one thing I love is that she writes the emotional so well, and that's what I'm looking for. I want to know what makes them tick *grin*

And yes, I love discovering a new author. I will completely ape after reading Sarah Monette's Melusine (fantasy) last year. I was/am still raving about it :)

Devon Monk is a new one for me.

I adore Joey Hill's Natural Law-LOVED IT.
