I'll be the first to admit that I'm a crier. A good one. I love to cry, so it's no surprise, that there are lots of things that make me cry. Being a girl, we know there are certain times when a good cry is just going to help. So, without further ado, my list of books, movies, TV, music that are guaranteed to make me cry:1- MOVIE: Steel Magnolias - It's my favorite go-to PMS movie. The scene at the graveside literally works for me every single time. Sally Field's abject rejection at her daughter's death is so powerful.
2- MOVIE: Stepmom - OMG. The scene at the end, where Susan Sarandon and Gena Malone are sitting the chair, and Gena finally realizes that this is her last Christmas with her Mom? *SOB* Gets me every time.
3- TV: Grey's Anatomy - Into You Like a Train. This is an episode where there's a massive trainwreck, and two people come in impaled on a pole, but both still alive. But one is going to have to die for the other to survive. Two total strangers, one horrible choice. The scene at the end where the woman realizes she's going to die, and she asks Dr. Shepherd to be the one to tell her fiance that she died bravely and with absolute love in her heart for him? It's a sobfest.
4- TV: Grey's Anatomy - Losing My Religion. Oh. I remember watching this episode live and meeting my roommate on the first floor (I'd watched in my bedroom, she'd watched in hers), and both of us were literally sobbing. It's the episode where Denny Duquette dies. It's gut wrenching and just so beautifully played by Katherine Heigl, who now aggravates the snot out of me, but won an Emmy for her performance.
5- TV: Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Body. This episode is done with no music whatsoever. It's the episode where Buffy comes home to find her mother dead. It is television perfection. Believe it.
6- BOOK: Blue Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas. There is one particular scene in this book, where Haven's husband has literally beaten the crap out of her, and physically thrown her out on the front stoop to sleep the night. Haven pulls herself up, and drags herself in bare feet and pajamas to a supermarket some distance from their home to call her brother to come and get her. It's gut wrenching, and painful, and just so poignant. It makes me cry every time.
7- MUSIC: Why by Nichole Nordeman. I don't listen to many Christian artists, but I adore Nichole Nordeman. Part of it is because her vocal range is right in my wheel house and I love to sing along. But also because she writes amazing, moving music, and is able to sing it with such conviction. This song is told from the viewpoint of a child going to witness the crucifiction. It's absolutely gut wrenching. I usually have to turn off the album before I get to the song because I know no matter what when I hear it, it will make me cry.
Your Turn: Are you a crier? And if so, what movie, TV, book or music gets you all choked up?

13 Comments:
Titanic was the only movie I cried during... twice!
The Bronze Horseman had me shaking because I was so overcome with emotion.
Blue Eyed Devil hit too close to home for me. Very emotional read also.
Man, The Body (Buffy) gets me every time I watch it.
I'm with you on the two Grey's Anatomy episodes. Ugh, gut wrenchers...
Also - Hope Floats, the scene where she's dancing with her daddy (riddled with Alzheimer's) in the nursing home. *sob*
And it's funny - I can get all sniffly if I simply enjoy a song or some sort of music a LOT. It just hits me in the chest for some reason; something I've noticed as I've gotten older.
I'm with Amy, Hope Floats has made me cry. Also, the ending of The Notebook - without a doubt the biggest sobfest. Oh, and the ending of Watership Down (does anyone else remember that movie?)
I so need to read BED again! It hits very close to home but, sometimes that can be a good thing.
I didn't used to be much of a crier, but OMG am I ever one now. I even found myself tearing up during Avatar.
Every single item on this list (except the music) made me sad. Joyce's death was hugely sad on Buffy. The movie Born Free made me sad as a kid. Bawled every single time. Same with Nestor the Long-Eared Donkey when he loses his momma. Life Goes On when Becca watches her boyfriend suffering w/ AIDS made me cry too.
Steel Magnolias, Beaches, and Stepmon get me every time. I also cried like a baby when Denny died on Grey's.
I cried during Defying Gravity the first time I saw Wicked. It is such an emotional song and just really touched me.
The Joy Luck Club. After the 1/2 hour mark, it's basically just non-stop crying until the end.
I'm a huge crier. I cry at almost anything :) My go-to cry books are the old Elizabeth Lowell books. I just finished Tere Michael's Faith and Fidelity book which had me sobbing..
Movies, I would have to say, Steel Magnolias, Beaches, Philadelphia (with Tom Hanks), The Color Purple and Black Hawk Down. These movies tear me up every time.
Liza - I ADORE that song!
OMG, a whole other category of crying -- movies or TV where animals are in peril! I remember sobbing watching Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. Yes, I'm a dork.
I still can't read any article that involves animal abuse, and I hate that Animal Cops show on Animal Planet. I can't deal with animals being hurt in any way.
Oh yes, heidenkind, the Joy Luck Club....
and the Red Lantern.... awesome movies.
I am a crier from way back. I have been known to cry at TV ads, if I see other people crying...just about anything!
In books, The Time Traveller's Wife had me crying big, ugly, sobbing cries, and The Bronze Horseman gets me every time.
There are a group of women who I go to the movies with just to watch the sad movies so we can all have a good cry together. Last movie we went to see was Time Traveller's Wife, and before that My Sister's Keeper.
Oh, and the other time I tear up big time is watching medal ceremonies during events like the Olympics.
OMG, a whole other category of crying -- movies or TV where animals are in peril!
The end of Dances with Wolves - I was in floods of tears over the fate of the horse and the wolf! Evil screenwriters - I can't cope with animal suffering.
My list would be easier to do if you asked which books, movies, songs that I DON'T make me cry. I cry all the time. Sometimes just a tear or two, other times I cry a river.
My kids know that I cannot read The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein without crying, even after reading it dozens of times. As far as grown up books.. Blue-Eyed Devil definitely stands out in my head as a very tearful one.
As for songs? "Kiss Me Like You'll Never See Me Again" by Alicia Keys.
And like Stacy, Christmas shows like Nestor! oh! And I wasn't allowed to watch "Little House on the Prairie" as a young kid because I'd cry so much and my parents couldn't take it! LOL
