Look at my beautiful niece, Rebecca and her boyfriend, Allen at VMI's 2011 Ring Figure dance.
Here's a little history of Ring Figure
The presentation of a VMI class ring, and the formal dance known as Ring Figure that marks the occasion, takes place in November of the Second Class (Junior) year. The event represents an important milestone in the life of a cadet, second only to graduation in importance. Each class is responsible for designing a unique ring, which incorporates symbols significant to the group. The elaborate Ring Figure tradition known to today's cadets dates to the 1920's; prior to that time, rings were received in a much more informal setting.
The Cadets are in their formal uniforms, and their dates all wear white gowns and elbow length gloves. I love the tradition of it.
Aren't they just gorgeous??

ETA: VMI = Virginia Military Institute, a university in Virginia.

Kati - your niece is gorgeous! I will confess to having to Google VMI (Virginia Military Institute) but...WOW! The ring tradition sounds amazing!
Oh goodie - Orannia looked it up for me :)
Your niece looks lovely - and her date very handsome! (Who doesn't love a guy in a dress uniform?)
Beautiful!! My dh went to the Naval Academy and they have a Ring Dance, too. Alas, we were not dating at the time, so I didn't go.
You aren't OLD enough to have a niece old enough to go that dance! Seriously! They're both good looking kids.
Question, what happens if the guy isn't serious about any one girl and doesn't want to give someone the ring? Isn't that what the ring dance was originally for?? Sort of like getting pinned? Is that what it was called?
But it looks like they were enjoying themselves.
Very spiffy. :)
Mon - The rings are for the guys, not the girls. Although Allen and Rebecca have been dating for almost three years, so he got her a ring too. But the rings are for the guys.
ROFL - Ok, got it! And I LIvE in VA. LOL Junior and ring didn't click for me! *shaking head with chagrin*
