My Favorite Contemps

The other day, Renee had a post about some of her favorite historical romances. I haven't had a list in a while so I thought I'd go ahead and do a list of my favorite contemporary romances and why I love them so much. I'm going to endeavor to make them single books (not series) and to not repeat any authors.

1- Smooth Talking Stranger by Lisa Kleypas - This is Lisa's latest contemporary novel, and it replaces Sugar Daddy, which had been my favorite Kleypas-contemp. Why do I love this story? Jack. Only Jack. He is one of my all time favorite hero types, the caregiving alpha. He is dominant and aggressive, but also a total caregiver and willing to go the extra mile in all ways to make his woman happy. It's a heady thing, I think.

2- See Jane Score by Rachel Gibson - I remember the first time I read this book, I was enthralled by the professional athlete angle, and the tension between the hero (the athlete) and the heroine (a reporter). Full of funny scenes, comical interactions and very hot sexual tension, this book is an annual re-read for me.

3- Holding the Dream by Nora Roberts - This is the second in the Dream trilogy and features another of my favorite types of characters, the neurotic heroine. Kate is an accountant and has been given a leave of absense for suspected embezzlement. In the mean time, she's met the delicious Byron, who works for her family's hotel. He is another caregiving alpha, and one of my favorite Nora heroes ever. He just works stubborn, difficult Kate around until she realizes that she can't do without him. I love to watch the way super-smart Kate's brain works and I appreciate the way Byron just keeps at it, maneuvering her into love. You guys know I love Nora's books, but this is the one I re-read the most.

4- To Die For by Linda Howard - I know that Blair Mallory doesn't work for a lot of people. But as someone who lived in the South for a number of years and knew plenty of women like her, I loved her. She's smart and sneaky and manipulative. Yes, she throws a dandy hissy fit, but you've got to love how Wyatt, her hero, just dominates her. I love the ongoing struggle between the two of them for power. Blair makes me laugh every time. But I get that this book isn't for everyone.

5- Practice Makes Perfect by Julie James - What a gold mine Julie is! Sparkling dialog, hilarious settings, and most of all smart, fiesty heroines who always seem to get the last word. What's not to love about Peyton and JD? They're in a battle for partnership and the "hatred" they think they have is more like combustable chemistry and attraction. Julie is absolutely a rising star in romance and I can't wait to read more from her.

6- Virgin River by Robyn Carr - OK, I'll admit it. Overall her Virgin River series gives me a toothache, but quite simply, I love this book. I consider it like a warm and fuzzy blanket. It's a sweet romance full of too good to be true hero-guy and damaged heroine. And the scene where Mel mourns for her husband brings me to tears every time.

7- Fallen from Grace by Laura Leone - The story of Ryan a male prostitute, and Sara, his next door neighbor. The books is emotionally gripping, ridiculously sweet (but not toothache inducing) and a lovely story. It's not a book for everyone, but it's such a wonderful, touching story and one that I just love sinking into.

8 - Paradise by Judith McNaught - I love McNaught. I know her writing doesn't work for a lot of people, but I cut my teeth on her books, and they just work for me. I love an autocratic dominant hero, and Matthew Farrell epitomizes that. He's got a short temper, makes ridiculous assumptions and in general behaves like an asshat. But man, when he apologizes, he does it well. This book is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, but I loves it.

What are your favorite contemporary romances?

Practice Makes Perfect is one of my favorite contemps this year. Also with you on Howard's Blair books and Lisa Kleypas.
Would Erin McCarthy also be counted?

I do love Erin McCarthy's NASCAR series, that's for sure!

Kati- I adore Blair Mallory. She cracks me up with her 'lists of transgressions'.

Katiebabs- I hope Erin McCarthy counts because I was going to throw "Hard and Fast" out there. I just read it this week. Ty has moved to the top of my hero list and Imogen as fav heroine. I loved watching the way her brain worked and Ty's struggles to get her name right.

This is a great idea. I think I'm going to do my own post on it and link back here, okay?

Poor, poor, Gage. You just dropped him like a hot potato when Mr. Jack Travis came waltzing onto the scene, didn't you? ;-)

Thanks for the shout-out, Kati! (And you, too, Ms. Katiebabs!)

Three contemps that stand out for me are: Linda Howard's Mr. Perfect (although I guess that's romantic suspense); Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie, and Sugar Daddy.

I own Paradise but haven't read it yet. Hearing your recommendation, I might have to bump that up in the TBR pile. And See Jane Score definitely sounds right up my alley.

Hi Julie! Of course I'd include one of your books, I just couldn't decide on JTSMA or PMP. I went with PMP because Peyton was just so perfect! And yes, I'm fickle. I loves Jack more, but definitely wouldn't kick Gage out of bed. What can I say? I'm a hussy!

Heidenkind, I'd be honored! I think I'm going to do this with historicals and PNR too. Maybe some folks will find some good beach reads.

Great list, Kati! Thanks for the link back. I've actually been thinking of doing these genre lists, like one a week.
There's a few here that are either on my tbb list, or look like they must be added. I've read (and really liked) Rachel Gibson, and don't know why I haven't read more of her backlist. Same goes for Linda Howard. I must track these titles down.
I'm really looking forward to the Julie James, which I've requested from the library. I keep hearing about how great the dialogue is and I just love smart repartée.
While I liked STS, I'd have to have Sugar Daddy as #1 on my list of favorite contemps. I don't read a ton of contemporaries, though that has been changing over the last year.
Thanks for some great suggestions! :-)

Holly lent me See Jane Score when we got together - I really need to read that one soon.

Practice Makes Perfect - love it so much. Great book.

STS - of course how could I not love this with Jack in it.

I just finished Butterfly Tattoo by Deidre Knight and it was a great contemp as well - definitely not your standard but so very wonderful

YAH - I have electricity :)

Great list Kati! On my list *thinks* I'd have to include Bet Me (Jennifer Cruise), which just me laugh and laugh and laugh; Linda Howard's Mackenzie's Mountain (my first ever LH book and my favourite); Blue-Eyed Devil (Lisa Kleypas) 'cause it spoke to me :)

I haven't read Rachel Gibson. See Jane Score sounds amazing though, so obviously I should start there :)

Oh, and your Nora Roberts pick and sounds absolutely amazing and I'm going to hunt it down now :)

And I keep coming across Fallen From Grace, so I'm going to try and find that too :)

*ignoring groans from TBR list, orannia scampers off to the library catalogue*

Kati, I love Holding the Dream--just reread it not long ago. Ditto on Virgin River. How can you not love Jack?

I also love Nora's "Born In" trilogy. I usually reread those every year or so.

i don't read many contemps since i have a harder time finding ones i like, im pickier with them than my historicals.

my only two contemps that i have just LUURVED are:

Wow, thanks for this instructive list! I'm putting Fallen from Grace on my TBB. Something about that setup appeals to me. And Jane.

CJ - I think you'll love Fallen From Grace. It's a really emotional story and very sweetly told. But I think as a writer, you'll appreciate it. Leone is a very smart story teller.
